How to Create a New Habit

How to Create a New Habit

There’s no right or wrong time to start a new habit apart from starting today is the best thing to do!

If you want to see different results, you can’t keep doing the things you’ve always done. Your life is a product of all the large and small habits you create, so if you want to make a difference and see results you must change the habits that are not helping you get what you want with new ones that will.

Here are some steps to change a habit that is not serving you:

ACKNOWLEDGE

The first step in changing any behavior or habit is first understanding what you’re doing (or not doing) that may be holding you back. What is something that you do that you might not even be noticing that is holding you back?

CREATE A MEASURABLE GOAL

Make an action plan to achieve the habit or behavior you’re working to change. Make sure these steps are measurable so you can track your progress. For example if your new habit is to workout, how long will this be for and how many days a week? Then you can go back and see if you achieved it.

START SMALL

When changing a habit or creating a new one, it’s important to remember to start making changes slowly. For instance, if you want to create a good morning routine instead of doing everything at once, start by getting up at your desired time. Once you’ve mastered that, you can implement new things like listening to a podcast, journaling, or meditating.

HAVE GRACE

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Changing a habit is hard work and requires trial and error. You won’t get it perfect and it’s important to stay positive and keep going. You can’t fail if you just don't quit.

I know you’ve got this. Let me know what habits you’re changing for yourself in the comments below.

I am working hard on changing my 2 bad habits #1 I don’t eat – sometimes I’ll go all day – I’m just not hungry at all. #2 I do like to have dinner but I also like to have 2 glasses of wine with my dinner so I am working on trying to cut back on that habit. Baby Steps.

Yes! This! I’ve often overwhelmed myself by trying to implement change too much at once. This past month I was trying to get up early, meditate, workout, and journal all before starting to work. That lasted like three days. Too much to make a habit all at once! But after I trimmed it down I’ve developed a habit of getting up earlier, making a cup of tea, and mediating every morning before beginning work, and it’s become so important to me! My morning would feel wrong without it. Next month I’m going to mute all social media in the morning so I have enough time for a daily workout!
