Keeping your momentum strong within your healthy lifestyle can be challenging.
This is especially difficult with all the uncertainty of the world we are currently experiencing. How can we stay motivated to keep going when its acceptable to wear sweatpants everyday and never leave the house!?
Starting, stopping and starting over is not only a waste of time but it can be very discouraging when trying to reach your goals. With variables such as climate, life events & injuries, it seems like there is always factor that causes us to lose our momentum. No matter what your circumstances, it is possible to keep pushing and for your momentum to keep going.
Here are 5 tips for you to keep the momentum alive!
Keep Momentum By Creating a Support System
Sharing your goals and intentions with your family and friends can have many benefits. By telling them what you are trying to accomplish, they will have a better understanding on how they can support you. People can't read your mind so it's important to express what you want and need in order to be successful. If you are going to a family or friends house for a shared meal and you are concerned about what is on the menu, call them ahead of time! Find out what is going to be served and if there will be something there for you to eat and still stay on track with your goals. You can always bring a dish that better aligns with your nutrition while also contributing to the meal.
Having accountability is essential with anything in life. Whether you are trying to get your summer bod or write a book, you have to have someone who you check in with. We are much more likely to stay on track when we also have to answer to someone besides ourselves. Your accountability partner should know exactly what your goals are and your plan of action to achieve those goals. This person should be dependable, non-judgmental and trusting.
The BTES Community is a perfect place to find a buddy to help you stay accountable. Together we share our goals, struggles and triumphs and always have each others backs. Finding someone who will cheer you on and keep you accountable along the way is a great way to stay focused and keep your momentum.
Forming Healthy Habits Help Momentum
In order to continue momentum it is crucial to create and maintain healthy habits. It can sometimes be difficult to break your bad habits, but small changes can have a profound effect on your life over time. No matter what your previous bad habits are, making the conscious decision to create healthy habits will positively affect your mind, body & soul. The first step in changing any behavior or habit is first understanding what you’re doing (or not doing) that may be holding you back.
If you want to see different results, you can’t keep doing the things you’ve always done. Your life is a product of all the large and small habits you create, so if you want to make a difference and see results you must change the habits that are not helping you get what you want with new ones that will. Not sure where to start when creating healthy habits? Check out my blog here for 12 tips to get started. Healthy habits are not just physical, they are also mental and emotional. Focusing on all three is a sure way to keep your momentum going strong.
Time Management is Key For Continued Momentum
Put down your phone and stop scrolling! Its easy for time to pass when we are so wrapped up in technology. Making a schedule and planning out your days and week is a great way to be more productive with your time and never feel like you are behind. When you turn off Netflix and put your phone down, you will be surprised at how much extra time you have.
Frequently, when we are overwhelmed and feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day, the first things to go are eating right and exercising. Life happens and sometimes it can be difficult to find time to get your workout in or eat a healthy meal on the run. By creating a more detailed schedule for your week, you are allowing yourself to take the guessing out of the equation and become more efficient with your time. It’s so easy to start doing the irrelevant, simple stuff first because it’s easy to check off your to-do list but then you realize you haven’t gotten to the most pressing tasks.
Make sure you are taking care of your body by eating right and exercising often. I have made it so easy for you within the BTES App! Everyday you have exactly what workout you should do, plus a recipe that takes all the guessing out what to cook. By having these two things scheduled into your routine, you will take care of the most important tasks first and your momentum will not falter. The rest of what you have going on during your week will fall right into place and you will have more time than you think.
Celebrate The Small Wins For Positive Momentum
Whether it be big or small, a win is a win. It is important to celebrate the small wins as well as the big ones. Small wins can happen every day and when you recognize them you get excited, which will continue to propel you forward. When we set large goals for ourselves, sometimes it can seem as if we are never going to get there. By achieving small wins along the way, we can see and feel the progress we are making and that big goal doesn't seem so far away anymore.
Small wins are everywhere and happen all the time. If you are focusing specifically on nutrition, a small win can be to hit your protein number every day for a week. Choosing to eat lean proteins and veggies over pizza, drinking enough water throughout the day, not snacking late at night are all examples of small wins when it comes to healthy nutritious choices. In terms of fitness, adding 15 minutes to your weight training session, lifting heavier weights and running a faster mile pace than last week, should ALWAYS be celebrated.
Celebrating yourself is celebrating all the progress you have made whether it be big or small. It makes you feel good and when you feel good, you keep going.
To Keep Your Momentum Going, Write Down What You've Done
When reflecting on your journey and seeing how far you have come, you will naturally feel the urge to stay focused and continue to push forward. Physically seeing a list of everything you have done will give you a sense of accomplishment that you will not want to give up. When you see the list get long and longer, eventually you won't want that list to stop!
There are many benefits to writing down both your successes and failures. Reading these will push you into action to continue to succeed. It will improve your focus because you will begin to direct you attention specifically to your goals. It will help you track your progress by being able to reflect on where you went wrong with your failures and how you can learn from that moving forward.
