The Power of a Positive Mindset: 5 Ways to Strengthen Your Mental Resilience

lifetsyle mindset August 16, 2024

It’s Rebecca Louise here, and today we’re diving into something incredibly powerful—your mindset. A positive mindset is the secret sauce that not only helps you reach your fitness goals, it also guides you through life’s challenges with grace and determination.

It’s about taking control of the narrative in your head, showing up for yourself, and building the life you truly want. Let's break down five powerful ways to work on your mindset and keep that positivity shining through!

Before that, let me just share something real quick from a personal story and the power of community in challenging times.

Anytime I’ve gone through a challenging time—whether it’s the ups and downs of business, a breakup, or just one of those tough seasons that life throws at us—the best way I’ve found to bounce back quickly is to show up and pour into others.

When we’re going through something difficult, it’s so tempting to isolate ourselves, to retreat into our own world. And that’s when things can get really tough. We start to overthink, feel overwhelmed, and it’s easy to slip into feelings of anxiety or even depression. The last thing you want to do during these times is to isolate yourself.

The best way to get through anything and to bring your energy and light back is to pour into others. It might sound unreasonable, however when you focus on helping others, you shift your focus away from your own problems and start to see the bigger picture. You begin to realize that you have so much to give, even when you’re feeling low.

I always tell my team two big things: Participate and contribute.

The more you participate, the more you contribute, the more energy you’ll have for everything in your life. You won’t feel so lonely, and you’ll find that helping others helps you just as much, if not more.

It’s like a ripple effect—when you bring light to someone else’s life, it reflects back on you. So, whenever life gets tough, don’t withdraw. Instead, dive into your community, whether it’s your friends, family, or even online groups. Participate, contribute, and watch how your own energy and mindset transform.

  1. Start with Gratitude: The Foundation of a Positive Mindset

Gratitude is the cornerstone of a positive mindset. When you start each day by focusing on what you’re grateful for, it shifts your perspective from what’s lacking to what’s abundant in your life. It’s not about ignoring the challenge, it’s acknowledging the good that exists alongside them.

One of my favorite ways to practice gratitude is by keeping a gratitude journal. Every morning, write down three things you’re grateful for. It could be something as simple as the sunshine, a good workout, or a kind word from a friend. When you train your brain to seek out the positives, you’ll find more and more things to be grateful for throughout your day.

In one of my podcast episodes, Grit and Gratitude: Finding the Silver Lining, I talked about the importance of gratitude in building resilience. It’s about finding those silver linings even when the clouds seem overwhelming. Remember, a grateful heart is a magnet for miracles! Check out episode her

  1. Visualization: See It, Believe It, Achieve It

Your mind is a powerful tool that can work for or against you, depending on how you use it. Visualization is about harnessing that power to create a mental image of what you want to achieve. Whether it’s crushing your fitness goals, landing that dream job, or simply feeling more confident, visualization can help make it a reality.

Start by closing your eyes and imagining your goal in as much detail as possible. What does it look like? How does it feel? The more vivid the image, the more real it becomes in your mind. This isn’t just wishful thinking—visualization has been shown to prime your brain for success, helping you to stay focused and motivated.

Listen here to how I share how visualization helped me prepare for my biggest challenges, including summiting Mount Everest. When you can see your success in your mind, it becomes easier to take the steps needed to achieve it in reality. Check out the episode!

  1. Affirmations: Rewire Your Brain for Positivity

Affirmations are positive statements that help you challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts. When you repeat them often and believe in them, you can start to make positive changes. Think of affirmations as your mental workout—they strengthen your mindset just like physical exercises strengthen your body.

Every morning, stand in front of the mirror and speak your affirmations out loud. Say things like, “I am strong,” “I am capable,” “I am worthy of success.” Even if it feels a little silly at first, stick with it. Over time, these affirmations will start to rewire your brain, making positivity your default state of mind.

Remember, it’s not just about saying the words, it’s truly believing them. If you’re new to affirmations, start small and be consistent. Just like with any workout, you’ll see the results over time.

  1. Surround Yourself with Positive Influences

Your environment plays a huge role in shaping your mindset. The people you surround yourself with can either lift you up or drag you down. It’s essential to be mindful of who you spend your time with and what kind of energy they bring into your life.

You’ve probably heard the saying, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” If you’re surrounded by negativity, it’s going to be hard to maintain a positive outlook. Seek out those who inspire you, who challenge you to be better, and who support your dreams.

I always say that someone more successful than you will never leave a negative comment or judge you for going after your dreams. Why? Because they’ve been where you are, and they know what it takes to succeed. They don’t have time for drama—they’re too busy chasing their own goals and helping others do the same.

  1. Embrace Challenges as Opportunities for Growth

Life is full of challenges and how you respond to them is what defines you. A positive mindset doesn’t mean you ignore difficulties—it means you face them head-on with the belief that you can overcome them. Every setback is an opportunity to learn, grow, and come back stronger.

In the BURN App, we talk a lot about mental resilience—how to keep pushing forward even when things get tough. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about showing up, doing your best, and learning from each experience. Challenges are not roadblocks; they are stepping stones on the path to success

One of the best ways to build resilience is to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Push yourself out of your comfort zone regularly—whether it’s trying a new workout, taking on a new project at work, or simply saying yes to opportunities that scare you. Growth happens when you’re willing to stretch beyond what you know and embrace the unknown.

The Online Mindset: Spreading Positivity in a Digital World

We live in an age where social media is a huge part of our lives. It can be a tool for positivity and connection, it can also be a breeding ground for negativity and comparison. It’s interesting how you can often tell if someone is unhappy or negative by the way they respond to comments or create drama online. Happy, content people don’t waste their energy on tearing others down—they’re too busy living their best lives!

Before you post or comment, take a moment to reflect. Ask yourself if your words are adding value to the conversation. Are you lifting someone up or dragging them down? In a world where you can be anything, choose to be kind. It’s so much more powerful to spread positivity than to contribute to the noise of negativity.

Keep Moving Forward

At the end of the day, your mindset is something you have control over. It’s your superpower, your guide, and your biggest ally in creating the life you want. By focusing on gratitude, visualization, affirmations, positive influences, and embracing challenges, you can build a mindset that not only helps you survive and thrive.

Remember, every day is a new opportunity to work on your mindset. Just like fitness, it’s a practice—something you get better at with time and consistency. So keep showing up, keep putting in the work, and most importantly, keep believing in yourself. You’ve got this!
